A California sandwich chain known for meaty, fresh sandwiches has announced it will open a franchised location in Ahwatukee Foothills during the first quarter of 2014.

Togo’s Eateries has been around since 1971. They have had one location for about a year in Gilbert, but now the company has signed agreements with more franchise owners to open several additional locations in the Phoenix area.

The exact location of the Ahwatukee Foothills restaurant is unknown, but the company is confident it’s a market they want to be in.

“We’re focusing on a few areas we think would be great for the community and for Togo’s,” said Tony Gioia, chairman, CEO and partner of Togo’s. “We’re founded in California but our brand is well known in the Phoenix market. Our brand has carried very well in western states.

“I lived in the Phoenix area for many years so we go back often. We love Ahwatukee. It’s a great bedroom community. There’s a lot of people who go out to eat. It’s a good place to do business. When we open a restaurant we create economic activity for the community. It’s a good match for Togo’s and Ahwatukee.”

Togo’s has signed several franchise deals in the past few years. The company’s strategy is to expand quickly in western states where the brand is well known. They have locations in Oregon and plans to open in Boise, Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs. Gioia said between company stores and signed deals the company will have over 310 locations.

The owner of the franchise in Gilbert plans to open a new location at Rural and Ray roads in mid-November.

“Part of the American dream is to own your own business,” Gioia said. “People like the franchise model because with Togo’s we have a proven concept that has been around for over 40 years and we have a systematic way to run a restaurant successfully. We’re able to attract a lot of franchisees who want to own their own business. Financially it is a very attractive option.”

Togo’s is known for large, fresh sandwiches, wraps, salads and soups all prepared in store and for their “bank-teller” style of customer service, where one sandwich maker handles the entire order for a customer instead of sending the customer down an assembly line.
