After being franchisees of a national pizza company for years, Mark and Jody Pectol decided they were ready to have a little more creativity in their business and live where they want — in Ahwatukee Foothills.
That’s why they were thrilled when they found the perfect location to open their own pizza shop, Zzeeks Pizza Factory, at Warner Road and 48th Street, in the spot formerly occupied by Sammy B’s.
“Anybody that lived in Ahwatukee knows Sammy B’s,” Pectol said. “Sammy was a legend. It’s cool to come back here and be in this spot.”
Of course the Pectols wanted to make their shop their own. They completely gutted the space and have been working around the clock to build it back out. They created an open-kitchen concept so guests will be able to see their food being made.
The crown jewel of the restaurant is the custom-made Roto Flex Oven with four decks that will allow for 150 pizzas to be made every hour and cooked directly on the deck to create a crispy crust.
“Most places don’t have these because they’re labor intensive,” Mark said. “But it’s the best way to do it. The whole idea is to have a very open and clean kitchen. This is something different and fun. You’ll be able to see the whole process.”
Zzeeks aims to be a family-friendly restaurant. The menu will include pizza, wings and sandwiches. The atmosphere will include large TVs for sports and plenty of seating for parties of all sizes.
“I could take my winnings from a former life and retire and be fine, but we want to be here,” Pectol said. “We’re putting it all in the middle. I want to carry on Sammy’s tradition. We want to be here for at least the next 30 years.”
Zzeeks plans to be open by the end of this month at 4825 E. Warner Road.
