Ahwatukee Foothills resident Mark Minkowitz said his wife, Aida, is paranoid about scorpions.

“When she moved here two years ago her biggest fear was scorpions,” he said. “She researched and tried to find a place that had no scorpions to move into. She found an apartment complex and she bought a bed with a tall mattress... We got married and moved into my place and we had scorpions. I didn’t know about it because I was hardly ever there.”

Minkowitz said the couple immediately began researching ways to get rid of scorpions, but the results were not very positive. The only solution they could find was tough chemicals with unknown effects for humans.

While watching a video demonstrating the chemicals the couple noticed the scorpions in the video were being kept in a glass jar because they could not climb the glass. Minkowitz spent more than 30 years as a dental lab owner and technician so he began engineering a new product that used glass to keep scorpions away from homes.

Pest Borders is a glass border that is placed on exterior walls of a yard or home. It’s sealed flush against the wall and secured with a thin layer of silicone. The glass is impossible for scorpions to climb so it creates a barrier the insects cannot get past.

The company is brand new, but Minkowitz guarantees their work. He’s also offering insurance for the product and annual cleanings and inspections for free.

“Up until now there has only been one way to scorpion-proof your home,” he said. “That has been to spray chemicals. The studies on these chemicals are not good, but there have been no long-range studies. The materials they are using can have an effect on the development of young children. It doesn’t go away. It builds up. Why take the risk on exposing your family to toxic materials for long periods of time when you have an option of a mechanical solution that will also save you money in the long run?”
