A senior executive of an insurance company is returning to his roots by opening his own restaurant and bar with his wife near Ahwatukee.

Nabers, off Ray Road and 54th Street across Interstate 10 in Chandler, is a restaurant that features a full bar and live music. It’s a sort of blast from the past for owner Dick Nenaber. Growing up in South Dakota his parents owned a bowling alley, drive-in movie, restaurant and bar combo, but his favorite part of it was the bar and restaurant. He attended school at Arizona State University and managed bars in Tempe while going to school, but entered the corporate world after graduation.

This is Dick and his wife, Pam’s, first time opening their own restaurant.

“They just wanted to open a place in their neighborhood where they could go and have a good meal and listen to some great music,” said Denise Holliday, general manager for Nabers. “They wanted it to be a fun place to hang out.”

The concept is casual Americana. The food is modern comfort food. The couple has hired a chef who has created a menu focused on fresh and from-scratch items. The bar has 14 handles of craft and domestic beers and features craft spirits. They’re also serving their own pale ale, which was specially created by Four Peaks Brewery. Nabers also has a 40-bottle wine list.

Nabers has put a big focus on live music. They’ll have live country western, country rock and rock bands on Friday and Saturday night, starting at 9 p.m. They’ll also have live signers from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday, with happy hour from 2 to 7 p.m. and a late-night menu from 10 p.m. to midnight. On the weekends, Nabers will be open until 2 a.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, Nabers will open at 9 a.m. with a small breakfast menu and a Bloody Mary bar.

The restaurant’s complete menu and entertainment schedule can be found on its website, nabersaz.com. The restaurant is located in the Chandler Pavilions, 825 N. 54th St.
