Precision Corporate Staging (PCS), owned and operated by Ahwatukee residents Dave and Marla Stern, for a second straight year was recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a Blue Ribbon Small Business of the Year.
PCS was honored for its charitable work. The Tempe-based company donated $2.5 million in time, equipment and cash since the Sterns started in 2000.
Only 77 companies nationwide and two in Arizona were recognized this year under the program that pays tribute to standout small businesses across the country that distinguish themselves through professional accomplishments, community leadership, philanthropy, customer service and employee relations.
PCS won the award last year for its growth as a company.
The seven regional finalists will be named March 19 and all of this year’s Blue Ribbon Small Business Award winners will be honored at the 10th annual America’s Small Business Summit June 11-13 in Washington. During the summit, one regional finalist will receive the DREAM BIG Small Business of the Year Award and a $10,000 cash prize.
“We were blessed to make it as a company — we started in 2000 and survived 2001 and survived 2008 and 2009,” Dave Stern said. “We like to give back to kids’ programs.
“It’s our way of helping kids. If you can change one kid’s life you can change the world.”
Among the multiple charitable endeavors PCS involved itself in last year, the company donated audio, lighting and video equipment to Alice’s Christmas Pudding Concert, benefitting Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Foundation and to Chuck Brennan’s the FUNDRASIER. The Sterns also donated equipment and technical services to the March of Dimes for its annual signature event.
“As the business community has worked hard to do its part in moving the country forward economically, small businesses have continued to be the driving force responsible for much of our progress,” U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue said. “Our Blue Ribbon Award winners are the best of the best.”
One of the newest events PCS donated to was the 14th Annual Canon Customer Appreciation Reception and fundraiser benefitting the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
PCS also worked with the Rock and Roll Academy in Sioux Falls, S.D., St. Jude’s Hospital, Special Olympics, Make a Wish Foundation, Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, March of Dimes, Aunt Rita’s Foundation and donated audio/visual equipment and expertise to multiple police funerals from around the state.
“We have a desire to help and hopefully provide opportunities for others,” Marla Stern said. “To win an award like this means all our hard work is paying off and that we’re able to give back.”
