Most of us make resolutions but not all of us stick to them.

It is part of the mental game we play with ourselves. If you make it public it makes it harder to stray. I am just as bad. I usually make one public — the old standby is eating better, exercise more and lose weight — and one private.

But the way to go might be to have an outsider, someone who only knows you peripherally, make the resolution for you. It might give some insight to an area you need to work on that you are too close to the situation to see yourself.

OK, so that’s a terrible idea but I needed a hook to write a column about some resolutions I’d like to make for people in sports, so there you have it.

Its a few ideas that I’d like those in the sports realm to consider for the 2014 calendar year.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell

Never broach the idea of putting an NFL franchise in Europe again. I get the fact that the NFL has cornered the market in this country as the most popular sport and is a billion-dollar industry.

But that’s it — it is a made-in-the-USA success story — so leave it here.

Have your one-game-a-year fun overseas, but the logistics of having a franchise over there affects 16 other teams the week leading up to and the week after they play the European team with having to change practice routines, deal with jet lag and multiple time zone changes.

The AIA Legislative Council

Show a backbone.

Last March a proposal to tack a mileage requirement onto the transfer rule was kicked around until it got voted down by the 45 administrators, athletic directors, and board members that comprise the Legislative Council. Actually, there were just 39 members as six failed to vote at the meeting — and they came up one vote shy of the necessary two-thirds approval needed to pass it.

The mile mark was discussed among coaches and ADs, from anywhere to 10 to 50, it was generally expected that a proposal for a 25-mile radius would have the best chance of passing.

Even though it was pushed ahead by the Executive Board the 25-mile proposal couldn’t get any traction. So then the discussion moved to 50 miles, and that idea got past the proposal stage to a final vote — but the 25 votes that were cast in favor of the measure were one shy of getting the job done.

Somehow, someway find away to bring this idea back to the forefront and find that one vote in an order to put an end to the madness that is high school sports in Arizona.

Kirk Gibson

You do 162 pregame and postgame interviews. There are times when it is hard to tell the difference. Everything is so monotone.

You’ve shown a great personality at times — the “man down” segment on the Dan Patrick was priceless and when you ran to first base in practice and you stumbled and bumbled wasn’t planned, but still hilarious — and here’s to letting it come out for the fans see it more often, especially after big wins or games that were just nine innings of pain.

Ken Kendrick, Derrick Hall and Kevin Towers

Get Tanaka.

The latest Japanese import — Masahiro Tanaka — would be a huge step for the franchise.

It’s hard to tell how Japanese numbers, especially wins and losses, transfer to the Major League Baseball but 24-0 is still 24 and freaking Oh.

From what I’ve seen and read his split flinger is drop off the table nasty. He will come at a huge cost — $20 million just to negotiate — but the 25-year-old right-hander will close the gap with Dodgers and would be a nice addition to a rotation that is a bunch of 2s and 3s.

Big-time high school recruit

Keep it home.

I’m not referring to your final destination, but how you go about your decision. It’s no one’s business on where you end up other than your family and maybe your coach. Forget social media. Don’t encourage the fans of programs you have interest in interact with you. Just be classy, make a good solid decision and make it at home.

Bruce Arians

Keep that Kangol hat.

Just one man’s opinion — it’s not a good look. It’s something a retired 61-year-old should be wearing while playing chess in a park somewhere and not running a NFL team.

But it is clear it works for you and the job you have done the last two years — winning 19 games (nine with Colts, 10 with Cardinals) — so if the Kangol fits, wear it.

It will look good with a Super Bowl ring.
