The businesses located along the Price Corridor will have a new neighbor once OnTrac moves its corporate headquarters to Chandler later this year.
OnTrac, an overnight shipping company that serves eight western states, announced on June 26 it will shift its headquarters from its current Phoenix location to a 65,000-square-foot office space in the Continuum Science and Technology Park located along the Price Corridor in Chandler. According to a press release, OnTrac will spend more than $5 million to build the new facility, and it expects to add more than 850 jobs — OnTrac president Rob Humphrey said 75 percent of them will be customer service related — to the city during the course of the 11-year lease. OnTrac will begin its Chandler tenure with 200 employees once it opens the new facility, which Humphrey expects to move into by Oct. 1.
The decision to move to Chandler stemmed from factors like the city’s real-estate costs, the education level of the residents, the reduction of what he called a “long commute” for his employees and the sizable office space that will allow the company to meet the 850-employee projection.
“In fact, that’s part of the reason we decided to move into this building,” he said.
OnTrac’s impeding move will place it along the same strip as companies like Intel, Paypal, eBay and Orbital Sciences. The move will also provide OnTrac with two direct neighbors in Nationstar, which announced it will move to Continuum, and the previously Gilbert-based Infusionsoft.
“The real winner for this project was Continuum,” said Chandler economic development director Christine Mackay.
Mackay said the city spent a little more than a year working to get OnTrac located in the city and along a stretch of road she said the department calls the “it girl” because of its popularity among businesses. The addition of OnTrac also marks the end of a fiscal year that saw the city add approximately 4,800 jobs to its roster, highlighted by companies like GM, OnTrac, and Garmin’s recent decision to expand its operation in Chandler.
And Mackay said those announcements are the tip of the proverbial iceberg, as the city has other similar announcements to make throughout the rest of 2013.
“It’s just been so much fun for us,” she said.
