After three years in business in Ahwatukee Foothills Three Dudes Quilting is doubling its size at Elliot Road and 51st Street.

“Three years ago when we first took the space it was right after the stock market crash,” said co-owner Raymond Steeves. “We wanted all the space then, but decided to only take half of it. We took 1,600 square feet and opened in January of 2009. The story was if three years later it was still vacant, it was meant for us to take it. Three years later it was still vacant and so we took it.”

The store expanded from 1,600 square feet to 3,200. The additional space will allow them to expand their current collection of fabrics and add new products as well. Steeves said he is excited to be able to offer wool, something that no other local shops carry. Three Dudes plans to increase their fabric stock by 100 percent.

The new space also gives Three Dudes room for a new classroom. Their old classroom could hold only eight people while their new classroom will allow for 20 students at once. That gives them more flexibility for more classes and more clubs.

Three Dudes has been waiting for months to get permission from the county to expand, and in that time Steeves said customers have been sharing their excitement.

“Our clients have been very supportive and very helpful,” he said. “They come in every week to see how the progression is going and how the space is developing.”

The space will continue to develop slowly. Steeves expects to be getting new products in for the next three months.

“It seems like it was a lot of work, but now that it has happened it’s done and we’re ready to go,” Steeves said. “We’re really excited about it. We couldn’t have done it without our Ahwatukee customers. They’re the ones that keep us going. We’ve been very well received by the neighbors. If it wasn’t for the customers we wouldn’t be doing it at all.”

New class schedules, once they are formed, will be posted on their website at The store’s address remains the same at 5053 E. Elliot Road.
