Amidst ownership changes a local eye care practice continues to work like family, putting patient care first.
Dr. Murray S. Pratt, who lives in Ahwatukee Foothills, took over for Lifetime Eye Care’s previous owner, Dr. Alex Smith.
Pratt said he seeks to provide his patients with a comprehensive understanding about their eyes, from treatment, to prescriptions, and options on how to go about vision correction.
“Sometimes there are options and it depends on a patient’s situation, also more helpful for the patient in the long run to help take care of their eyes better,” Pratt said.
“That’s how I would want to be treated, and that’s how I like to treat my patients,” he added.
While working in Goodyear at Nationwide Vision, Smith, who was also a colleague, asked Pratt if he was interested in buying the business. Last spring, Smith was accepted into a year-long residency in California.
Pratt purchased the practice, near 40th Street and Chandler Boulevard, over spring and has a six-year lease for the building. Though ideally, Pratt said he is content with growing the practice’s roots deeper into the Ahwatukee community for as long as he can.
“I just see myself here in the community serving the patients,” said Pratt, who noted 30 years would be nice.
Smith and his wife, Rebecca, who still works as the practice’s office manager, had been running Lifetime Eye Care since 2008. In the four years Smith and his wife owned the practice, their business had doubled in size.
Long-time patients of the practice were “surprised at the change, they had grown attached to him,” Pratt said. “He is a great doctor.”
But the transition has been smooth, Pratt said.
“We want to continue in that growth and trajectory for Dr. Pratt,” Rebecca said. “I think it’s an exciting transition.”
As a first-time business owner, Pratt offered a few points of advice for others, mentioning that it’s a long process of paperwork in the beginning. He includes getting a lot of people to help in the business, talking to those who have business experience, and not getting caught up in only the dreamy ideas.
“(Good ideas) are only one part of the business, you have to pay attention to all the details as well,” Pratt said.
