Local and family-owned Barro’s Pizza will be hosting its second Holiday Hunger Fight, which is aimed to assist fighting hunger in Arizona and benefits the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance.

The charity event works simple: on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from open to close each of the 33 Barro’s Pizza establishments across the Valley will be donating their entire proceeds generated during the day to St. Mary’s Food Bank.

Proceeds generated provide meals for the St. Mary’s Food Bank, with every dollar being spent providing seven meals to the food bank.

Last year’s Barro’s Pizza Hunger Fight was able to earn upwards of $120,000 in less than 24 hours, which provided more than 840,000 meals.

Bruce Barro, co-owner of Barro’s Pizza, said the idea for the Holiday Hunger Fight was brought about by his brother, Mike, who remembered while living in Chicago a restaurant would host a similar charity event.

The three brothers decided to give the charity a shot, and have future plans on making it bigger each year.

This year, the Barro family looks to set the bar even higher with the hope of donating more than one million meals.

“We’ve added a couple of new units since then, that was 31 stores and now we have 33, so with the word getting out in our heads we’re thinking we can break $150,000,” Barro said. “I don’t see any reason why we can’t do that.”

Knowing that the charity will go on and benefit individuals of Arizona, Barro feels it’s a great fit.

“I think we get every bit out of it as a family and as an organization,” he said. “It’s a win-win.”

Jerry Brown, director of media relations for St. Mary’s Food Bank, said the inaugural Holiday Hunger Fight was by far the most successful one-day drive St. Mary’s Food Bank has ever had.

“The entire Barro family has been great supporters for the food bank and has helped us in other ways in the past by sponsoring our golf tournament one year and grew to this incredible one-day event,” Brown said.

The Barro family approached the food bank with the charitable idea for having 100 percent of its profits go to the food bank, and Brown said they were just overwhelmed with the family’s generosity.

“With this being the busiest time of the year for the food bank, with Thanksgiving and Christmas, this couldn’t be coming at a better time. We really salute them for their dedication and their commitment to the hunger in Arizona.”
