On its 20th anniversary of being in business, the owners of Zipps Sports Grill are bringing their fresh family friendly restaurant to a new 10th Valley location in Ahwatukee Foothills.

The Goldman family first opened Goldie’s in Scottsdale in 1993. When they decided to expand they wanted Goldie’s to remain the one and only, so Zipps was born. Zipps has eight locations in the Valley. The ninth location in Ahwatukee, at Warner Road and 48th Street, is expected to open this summer, said Nicole Momont, spokesperson for Zipps. Including Goldies, the family owns 10 restaurants in the Valley.

Zipps is a family friendly sports grill, Momont said. It’s set up to have a main dining area for families and then a bar area for the 21 and up crowd.

“Dad can come in and watch sports and doesn’t feel like he’s bringing his kids to the bar,” Momont said. “We also have the bar area reserved for 21 and older so another crowd can go in there and not feel like they’re in a restaurant with a bunch of kids. We cater to a few different demographics.”

Momont said the company spends a lot of time giving back, which is what has helped them be successful.

“They love finding a neighborhood that has a rich community feel and they felt Ahwatukee had that,” Momont said. “One of the biggest things the owners are all about is not only creating a place where people can come and spend time with their family, friends and neighbors, but they also like to be really active in the surrounding community where the restaurant is. They like to find a place that has the neighborhoods and schools they can get involved with. They’re really big on giving back to the residents.”

Zipps will take over the nearly 6,000-square-foot opening left by Blockbuster next to Nello’s Pizza and expect to hire 40 to 50 employees.

“A lot of people have a stigma about sports bars, that it’s a rowdy place, but the message we want to get across is this isn’t a typical sports grill,” Momont said, adding that the motto at Zipps is food first, sports second. She said all the food is fresh and made from scratch.

“We look forward to coming into (Ahwatukee) and inviting everyone to come check us out and then getting involved in what they have going on.”
