Improving putting can be a challenge for many golfers, but Ahwatukee Foothills resident Kyle Henderson says his new tool can help.

TIBA, or two inches before and after, is a small barrier that can be set up around a golf ball and teaches golfers how to steer the putter to hit the ball in a straight and consistent course.

The idea came as Henderson was being coached to improve his own putting.

“The coach I was with at the time suggested a tee drill,” he said. “You put four tees on the ground and your putter in between them and you putt that way to make sure your putter stayed squared in between the tees. I used that for a little while, but if I ever got off line with my putter it would hit the tee and basically stop my putter. I ended up putting very rigidly and not how you would want a putting stroke to be.”

Henderson began searching for a product that would allow him to do the same thing, but would have him complete the stroke and better understand where he was messing up. When he couldn’t find the right product he decided to make his own.

“A lot of other putting aids are big and bulky, you can’t take them with you,” he said. “A lot of them try to force you to swing a certain way. They basically want you to drag your putter along the aid, but I never wanted to do that because I felt like I wouldn’t be able to feel how I’m supposed to putt if I’m dragging my putter along something.”

The product is meant to help a golfer practice and improve their putting. Henderson said he believes any level of golfer could benefit from it. He quit his job just over a year ago to pursue golfing professionally and says he has already seen improvement in his own putting.

With a prototype already made, TIBA Putt now needs funding to get the product to market. Henderson and his business partner have started a “Kickstarter” campaign to raise the nearly $10,000 needed to manufacture the putting aid. If their campaign is successful, Henderson estimates it will be about seven weeks before the product would be available to consumers.
