While the recently opened Speakeasy Saloon and Grill may be a great place to get a fresh steak or enjoy a live country band, owner Jon Harris said to him it's all about family.

Harris, an Ahwatukee Foothills resident, spent months completely renovating the building with his father, Doug, mother, Sally, and wife, Judy, at his side. The family built a stage, dance floor, "Gone with the Wind"-style staircase that leads to a mezzanine and even an outdoor patio onto the building located at 7450 W. Chandler Blvd.

"When my wife and I saw this building we thought this is what it was screaming to be," Harris said.

He grew up on a cattle ranch in Baker City, Oregon, with a father who was a general contractor and built stadiums across the U.S. Harris got into music at a young age and spent years as a musician, but one day he had a vision of owning his own bar and grill with fine food and live music, just like a restaurant his parents used to enjoy when he was growing up. When he married his wife Judy, who has a background in the restaurant industry, they decided to make it happen.

For six months they had friends and family helping paint, scrape away old tile, and completely rebuild the inside of their new restaurant. Looking back, Harris said it's a huge relief to have it finished but he misses working so hard with so many loved ones.

"When you do it yourself, actually do it yourself, and you have the blessing of having your father right next to you, it's amazing," he said.

Harris said food, like music, is best when kept simple. At Speakeasy they use the best cuts of meat for their steaks and recipes that go back years. Their goal is to create a space where people can come for good, fresh food at a reasonable price, and then stick around for music and dancing.

Speakeasy is open Monday through Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. with live country music Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays starting at 9 p.m. and going until 2 a.m. They plan to also offer Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
