Safeway shoppers can now get their hands on personalized coupons and store specials through a new digital savings program.
Just for U syncs to a customer’s Safeway club card, through a smart phone app or online, and keeps track of purchases. The tool then shows savings and coupons based on a shopper’s items. Manufacturer coupons are also available on the app.
“It eliminates the need to clip coupons, save or keep track of them,” said Dan Valenzuela, Safeway’s Phoenix division president.
But for those who still like to cut out coupons from newspaper ads, no need to worry, they won’t be obsolete.
“This is just a way customers can get specials on items they really want,” Valenzuela said of the digital aspect.
Safeway took in customer feedback about their coupons sent out through advertisements while creating the digital program. Valenzuela said most customers felt the coupons they received didn’t apply to them.
Phoenix resident Angus McLoone said he might just give the new program a try.
“I thought it was just on a smart phone, but now that I know I can access it on my computer, it might be worth something,” McLoone said.
The program has already been rolled out in Chicago, Seattle, Southern and Northern California and Hawaii, Valenzuela said.
Valenzuela noted that the program is the first of its kind among Safeway’s competitors. Fry’s Food and Drug stores also has a mobile savings app, albeit through its parent company, Kroger.
Safeway shopper John Gallegos agreed that digital is the way to go, even when it comes to couponing.
“Everyone likes the next cool phone app,” said Gallegos, who will also give Just for U a try.
