New herb store coming to Ahwatukee

Herbs can do amazing things according to the owners of Chakra 4 Herb and Tea House, which just opened in the Plaza at Mountainside shopping complex at Chandler Boulevard and 40th Street.

The founder of the company, Kita Centella, said she’s been fascinated with herbs ever since she was a child and her grandmother taught her a few simple remedies. She began studying herbal medicine in 1983 and her obsession has grown.

Centella opened a Herb Stop franchise in Phoenix in 2002, but after four years decided she needed to create her own brand. Chakra 4 Herb and Tea House was started and her location at Camelback Road and 20th Street has grown over the years, even expanding to a restaurant called Sage Kitchen next door. Now Centella and her business partner, Nick Brown, are excited to bring Chakra 4 Herb and Tea House to a new location in Ahwatukee Foothills.

The Ahwatukee location of Chakra 4 will not include a restaurant but the store will carry all kinds of herbal remedies, teas of all varieties, herbs and spices for culinary purposes, essential oils, aroma therapy, and dozens of single herbs to create custom mixes.

“I want people to have the keys to the kingdom to their own health,” Centella said. “I want them to learn to take care of themselves using plant remedies. There are a lot of things we can do for ourselves that don’t require a trip to the doctor.”

Centella said she has spent years putting her knowledge of herbs and plant remedies into books, which her staff members study in order to help customers find the best solution for them. They also plan to host classes regularly to teach customers tips and tricks for natural healing. Her goal is to have each person through the door come in with a question and leave with an education.

“We want people to feel like this is for them, they can understand it and it’s accessible,” Brown said. “It’s not just for witches and counter-culture. It really is accessible to everybody. One of our biggest goals is to help people understand that they can understand. You can learn what you need to know for yourself.”

The store is expected to open in mid-May. It is located in the Trader Joe’s shopping center at 4025 E. Chandler Blvd.
