Kevin Mitchell has always had a love for Ahwatukee Foothills and remodeling homes. Now he’s combining those two with his new design center at Ray Road and 48th Street.

Mitchell, who grew up in Ahwatukee, has been co-owner of his family business since 2005 with his wife, Holly, mom, Dean Weeks, and stepdad, Ben Weeks. Back then Weeks and Mitchell Construction was a fix and flip company. They bought older homes in the Valley, remodeled the inside, and resold the homes for a profit. It was a fine business model during a housing boom but in 2007 when the market dried up they decided it was time to switch gears.

They began to contact banks directly and worked with them to fix problems with foreclosed properties so the homes could be sold. After a few years of working with the banks Mitchell decided to call ToFixIt, a local referral service, and see if they could get their company added to the list of approved general contractors.

“On that first call they said I’m sorry there’s too much of a waiting list,” Mitchell said. “They said they’d put us on the list but the likelihood of it coming to pass just wasn’t good so I just kind of wrote that off.”

One year later ToFixIt called back and said after rigorous background checks over the past year they’d been cleared to be listed on the website as a kitchen and bath contractor. In 2010 they began to get the bulk of their clients from ToFixIt referrals. That’s when the company noticed a change they needed to make and the idea for their own design center was born.

“We were competing with other contractors on ToFixIt’s website or referral program but they already had design centers,” Mitchell said. “Clients could go to their design center and pick out everything they wanted versus when I was selling I’d have to go to the different tile stores with the customers on a Saturday and then go and look at plumbing fixtures at a plumbing supply house. What could take 30 minutes to an hour in a design center was taking an entire weekend. Customers just didn’t want to fool with that. After doing that for two years we were doing excellent but I thought we could do even better.”

When it came time to pick a location Mitchell was eager to base his business out of Ahwatukee Foothills where he could be close to family and the community he’s always lived in.

“I did a lot of research,” he said. “These three ZIP codes have held their value better than any other ZIP codes across the Valley for the most part. In the same token the homes are all almost 30 years old. People around here still have some disposable income. They have the money to spend and it’s time to remodel. After I did my research and put together a business plan, this was a homerun for us.”

Clients can now come to the design center located at 4802 E. Ray Road and choose tile, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and counter tops in minutes to create their perfect bathroom or kitchen.

“I like seeing things come together,” Mitchell said. “When you’re building homes it’s not within two years like a sky scraper would be. It’s within months... With these bathrooms a customer comes in and sees a before picture and we basically turn it around in weeks depending on how big the job is. It is a complete makeover. Seeing the customer’s reaction is satisfying and gratifying to me and I know it is for them, too.”
