A local business is taking its own family’s love and making it affordable for teams across the Valley.

“We were looking for a small business opportunity,” said Christine Brown, co-owner of AZ Softball Academy. “We looked into many different things, but we decided this was a little niche market that would serve a purpose too since our kids play. It’s near and dear to our heart and we just decided to give it a shot.”

Brown said her two kids have been playing fast pitch softball for more than 10 years. In the past few years they’ve noticed many of their favorite indoor batting cages were shutting down. At the same time they were looking for a new opportunity and decided to start their own.

The facility began about a year ago primarily as a softball practice facility and in the past few months, after requests from customers, they have added more baseball equipment.

AZ Softball Academy is set up to welcome individuals or teams who need some practice batting, fielding or catching. They also have instructors for classes. Brown said what makes them unique is their completely customizable machines and the set up of their cages.

“We’re unique mostly because instead of coin-operated machines where it’s harder to adjust the frequency of the pitch level and usually has to be done from the back, we put in all totally customizable machines. You can adjust the height, the speed, anything you need. We chose them because that’s what my kids like to hit off of. We also have a very clean, family-friendly facility. We set our cages up more for development, instruction and team use than anything else.”

The company is located in Tempe at 1721 W. 10th Place, Suite 3, but Brown said now that they’ve been open for more than a year they are interested in building their customer base, especially welcoming the Ahwatukee Foothills community.

“There’s not much in the Ahwatukee area,” Brown said. “If you take a look at your 10-mile radius Ahwatukee is one of the closest communities to our facility… We’re at the point where we made it through the first year and now we’re ready to go to the next level, reaching out to the community and let more people know we’re here. For every person that knows we’re here, there’s just as many that have no idea.”

Brown said AZ Softball Academy will meet or beat competitors prices for team hitting.
