The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has taken over the small LA Boxing location at 48th Street and Warner Road in Ahwatukee Foothills, and is now rebranding the gym and adding more classes for the community.
LA Boxing was recently bought out by UFC Gym, which already has more than 100 locations across the U.S., mostly big-box locations. Purchasing smaller gyms like LA Boxing helps them expand faster.
Danny White, general manager of the location at 4825 E. Warner Road, said UFC Gym is partially owned by the same guys who started 24 Hour Fitness. The idea was to take the same big-box gym but replace the basketball court and the pool with a mat room, a punching bag room and a full-size octagon to offer more specialized classes on boxing, kickboxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) fighting.
The owners realized most guests who used their gym were not coming for the weights, but for those specialized classes. They could open smaller locations and focus more on the classes and expand at a much faster pace.
The classes LA Boxing offered will be comparable to what’s now offered at UFC Gym, but there will be more options, White said. There will still be tough kickboxing or boxing classes, but there will also be more MMA and various other types of martial arts. White said in the future the company plans to add a crossfit-style class, a TRX class, which is a full-body suspension class that uses your body as the weight, and then more weights like kettle bells, medicine balls, slam balls and battle ropes.
All classes are taught by professional or amateur MMA fighters, but to come to the gym you don’t have to have fighting aspirations, White said. It’s really geared to any audience.
“In no way, shape or form is this a fighter gym,” he said. “The idea is to train like an MMA fighter. When people come in here they won’t be punched in the face. We have that available if that’s what they want as far as sparring and stuff like that but the usual classes, for the most part, you won’t get beat up in class. But, it is a hard and intense class. It’s not a walk in the park.”
White said on average people lose between 800 and 1,000 calories per class.
UFC Gym has classes for all ages. There are classes for kids as young as 5 going on at the same time as the adult classes.
Membership is a monthly membership with contracts from month to month up to six months. The gym is open for free lifting during the day and has classes scattered throughout the day.
