Prickly Pair boutique in Ahwatukee Foothills has mastered the art of diversifying.
After eight years in its location in the Trader Joe’s Plaza at Chandler Boulevard and 40th Street, they’re taking their good deals on home décor, women’s clothing and home remodeling across the street.
Rosanne Youngblood, owner of Prickly Pair, said they moved because of the noise coming from their new neighbors, but added that she’s been surprised by how much business has improved. She believes foot traffic has tripled.
The boutique is what draws customers in but Youngblood says it’s all their extra offerings that have kept them in business. Prickly Pair doesn’t just offer unique gifts for the home. Operating out of the same location is Youngblood Designs LLC.
They offer interior and exterior painting, ceramic tile, designer Formica, cabinet staining, bathroom remodeling, carpeting and many other home enhancing choices.
“We offer complete service for the home, no matter what it is,” Youngblood said. “I’ll find them the best price… At one time everybody said to be successful you’ve got to pick one thing and stick with it. When the economy was great that’s what you did. The economy is poor and people just want to find a good deal. In order to survive you have to diversify.”
Youngblood Designs takes the guess work out of remodeling, she said. That’s because Youngblood can enter a home and help consult customers on what paint color, cabinet finish or counter top will look best with their decorations.
Youngblood has a degree in interior design but for years she was a buyer for a large department store’s home department. Her husband has always been a contractor. When they moved to Arizona 10 years ago they decided to join forces and began a paint contracting business.
Two years later the two opened up their shop, which eventually began to sell home merchandise and then offer remodeling. Just two years ago they started offering women’s clothing, which Youngblood said has been very successful. They plan to go after more women’s clothing in the spring.
“We’re gearing toward that 35- to 60-year-old age range,” she said. “There are certain things you look for. We keep it in mind to be sexy but not revealing. We want to still be in fashion but not looking like your teenager. That’s the clothing we carry.”
Above all Youngblood said what will never change at Prickly Pair is the customer service. It’s what has always made them successful.
