The city of Phoenix has been named one of the Valley’s healthiest employers by The Phoenix Business Journal. The city was ranked 13th among large employers with 1,500 or more employees.
Phoenix was recognized for an initiative that resulted in reduced health-insurance premiums for more than 80 percent of employees enrolled in city medical coverage. To qualify for the lower premiums, employees completed a voluntary health risk assessment that included information about their medical history and lifestyle. Participants also provided data from basic health screenings that were conducted for free at city work locations. Employees who were identified with health risks received free follow-up information and support.
In addition to reduced premiums for qualifying employees, the city’s Benefits and Wellness Program includes free flu shots, health stations at many work locations, on-site mammograms and prostate screenings, and health education classes and presentations. The city also participates in two local fruit and vegetable co-ops, with employees paying for their own memberships.
