A year after Abacus Inn shut its doors at the Ahwatukee Mercado shopping center, at the southwest corner of 48th Street and Elliot Road, a new Asian restaurant is open for business and hoping to bring customers back.

Pacific Garden serves Canton-style Chinese food along with sushi and a few Thai and Vietnamese dishes. With large serving sizes and TVs around the restaurant, the manager of the store, Scott Hamilton, said they’re prepared to accommodate any kind of diner.

“There’s not a lot of Asian cuisine in the area, especially this fusion of sushi and Chinese kitchen,” Hamilton said. “We wanted to do that so hopefully families can come out and eat together. If the parents want orange chicken and the kids want sushi we can accommodate everyone.”

This is the owner’s second location. Their location in Gilbert at McQueen and Elliot roads has been open for nearly six years. Hamilton said that location is packed on the weekends, so the owners were looking to expand.

Abacus Inn had been in the Ahwatukee Mercado for years before shutting down unexpectedly in May of 2011. Hamilton said he can remember eating at Abacus Inn as a kid. Now that it’s gone the owners of Pacific Garden were excited to be able to fill that void.

The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, from noon to 9 p.m., at 4747 E. Elliot Road, Suite 7. Contact them at (602) 795-3333.
