New Valley Church in Ahwatukee is offering Financial Peace University, a well-known program, for those wanting direction in how to save, spend and get out of debt.

Financial Peace University follows a curriculum based on biblical principals for use and management of money and using it in “God’s way.”

In a nine-week course, participants go through a range of topics covering saving, insurance, retirement, college planning and how marketing affects spending, among others.

Dave and Liz Haveman went through the course last year, and have since paid off all consumer debts.

“We thought we knew how to budget, but had it all wrong,” said Liz. “We just learned so much and I think every young, married couple should go through it.”

The church, near 50th Street and Chandler Boulevard, is in its third session of the program that will last until the end of May.

“We already have several people (signed up) for another class in September and definitely want to reach out to Ahwatukee,” said coordinator Laurie Gargione.

The course even addresses the counter-cultural idea of giving to local churches, as the course website describes that participants “learn how generous giving can completely revolutionize your attitude and improve your finances.”

About a dozen churches and sites are currently using the program around the Valley.

Gargione said the response from church leaders has been positive.

“Our pastor and his wife have taken the class and are enjoying the transformation,” she said.

Classes are hosted every Sunday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

New Valley Church is located at 15220 S. 50th St., Suite 101.
