Pet overpopulation is reaching epidemic proportions in America. Everyday thousands of hungry, homeless dogs and cats roam our streets and neighborhoods looking for food and shelter. Thankfully, this is an epidemic with an effective, humane solution.

Altered Tails is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to helping end the problems of pet overpopulation by providing affordable spay/neuter service to owners and rescue organizations who cannot afford to do so otherwise. They also are actively involved in reducing the number of feral cats living in our communities through their Trap, Neuter, Return Program.

Humane Alliance is a nationally acclaimed organization in Asheville, N.C., considered to be the expert in providing clinical training programs for groups interested in opening high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter clinics.

Thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities, Altered Tails' staff was invited to receive hands-on training from Humane Alliance in Asheville.

In addition, two Humane Alliance medical staff members came to Phoenix to observe and evaluate Altered Tails' staff in action. The result was that Altered Tails became the 101st Humane Alliance accredited sterilization clinic in the nation and the only clinic in Arizona to receive that accreditation.

This state-of-the-art training has enabled Altered Tails to provide better, more efficient and more budget-friendly spay/neuter services for cats and dogs in the Phoenix area. In 2011, Altered Tails provided services for more than 8,000 dogs and cats and they are expecting a 25 percent increase in the number of sterilizations in 2012 as a result of their Humane Alliance experience.
