Perhaps you have noticed that the summer months in Ahwatukee can be particularly slow, if you own a store here you are probably VERY aware of that fact. Many people head out of town for long periods of time and fewer people show up at your shop. I recently realized how much this downturn affects the stores in Ahwatukee.
Seeing this very thing happen in Ahwatukee has prompted the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce to want to take action. So on Saturday, Aug. 18 we want to start a community “Cash Mob.” Maybe you have heard about these in the news lately or you have been fortunate enough to already be part of one. A “cash mob” is a take-off on “flash mob.” Gather some friends and choose local businesses to patronize. This buy-local movement supports small businesses, community relationships and helps draw people together. It’s a true win-win for all parties.
The Cash Mob on Aug. 18 is all about shopping local. On that Saturday, spend your money at your neighborhood businesses. I challenge you to go to at least five stores and spend whatever you can. Eat out, buy clothes, buy that hammer to fix whatever project you have been procrastinating on, buy a gift for an upcoming birthday or occasion, eat a heaping helping of yogurt, groom your pets, buy jewelry, buy groceries, fix your pool or buy a float, buy a horn for your bike, buy a dozen roses for that special someone, have a cup of coffee, go smoke a cigar, make that eye appointment, doctor appointment, podiatry appointment, get a massage, mail a package, find a financial advisor, open a bank account, get your oil changed, sign your kids up for an exercise class or camp, whew ... there is A LOT to do in our community and I haven’t even named everything. Do WHATEVER you can to support the local business owners, but start early so you can get it all in.
Be sure to share this with everyone you know, every business owner you know, and get them out here to support the community. Let the rest of the Valley see how we work together to keep the Ahwatukee community an awesome place to work and live.
If you own a business and would love to be sure we all know where you are and what you do, get on the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber Facebook page and post it there. If you don’t have access to Facebook, send an email to Christie Ellis at Christie.M.Ellis@gmail.com and your information will get posted there.
