Police are searching for a man who snuck into an apartment through a partially open kitchen window, then held the 90-year-old victim hostage as he ransacked the apartment early Sunday morning.

The home invasion took place in the 16400 block of South 12th Street, near Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School.

The victim sustained a broken clavicle along with bumps and bruises in the ordeal. She was treated and then released from a local hospital.

The suspect was described as a black male, in his 30’s, wearing dark, baggy pants, a multi-colored bandana on his head, and gloves. Police say he also had a strong Southern accent or drawl.

Taken were credit cards, a flat-screen television and other items, including the victim’s 1994 Lexus, which was used to carry the loot away and was discovered abandoned in the 16000 block of South Desert Foothills Parkway later Sunday.

Police say that home invasions are rare in Ahwatukee Foothills. But with the cooler weather, people need to be aware that open windows are an invitation to burglars.

“The cooler weather is coming, so people want to enjoy it, and you can do it, but do it wisely,” said Sgt. Bryant Rockwood.

He suggested making sure that sliding windows have a lock so they can only be opened a few inches to allow a breeze, but not so much that someone can reach inside or climb in.

Rockwood added that sliding glass doors should also have locks so they can’t be lifted up and off the tracks.

And, lastly, don’t leave valuables where they can easily be seen.

For more information on crime prevention tips, contact police officer Rick Tamburo at (602) 534-2892.

Anyone with information on Sunday’s home invasion is asked to call Crime Stop at (602) 6151 or Silent Witness at (480) 948-6377, where rewards are available for anonymous tips.
