Phoenix firefighters quickly extinguished a garage fire Thursday afternoon after a quick thinking neighbor alerted the homeowners to the fire.

Adam Garcia was at home when he saw a pillar of smoke in the 4700 block of East Summerhaven Drive and went to investigate.

"I saw the garage was open and flames were coming out," said Garcia. He banged on the front door until the homeowner came out and attempted to extinguish the flames with a garden hose.  Garcia tried to help but couldn't find another hose long enough to reach the flames.

Fire Captain Barry Morgan said the homeowner was slightly injured in the blaze that broke out around 2 p.m.

"He did report he had a burn...but he refused transport," to the hospital said Morgan.

The couple who own the house weren't available Thursday afternoon, but Garcia said the man had a slight burn on his head from fighting the flames.

A neighbor, Louis Pica said that there were several explosions as the cars in the garage were engulfed in flames.

Explosions were a worry, said Garcia, when he initially went up to the house.

"I was afraid it would blow up at any minute," said Garcia afterwards.

Two cars, a BMW and a Mercedes, were in the garage and are a total loss. The fire was contained to the garage area, but no estimates of damage were available according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Garcia was modest about alerting the homeowners.

"I only hope someone would do that for me," he said.
