After a long hiatus, the Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning Committee meets Monday night.

The agenda has just one action item: a discussion on possible changes to requirements for on-site recycling containers at apartments and businesses.

But the big item will be a briefing on the history of planning in Phoenix and on plans to update the city’s massive general plan, which outlines growth, development, services, transportation and recreation in the city.

The update to the general plan will occupy the committee for the next six months and will result in a new vision for Phoenix that will guide growth and development in the city through 2050.

Monday night will focus on the history of the general plan, but starting next month the committee and public will be asked to help craft the new plan by answering questions, staring Oct. 26, with “What do you value in Phoenix?”

“We’re really trying to get input and we really want input from youth,” said Michelle Dodds, a city planner who is also the liaison to the Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning Committee.

The all-volunteer committee meets at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Pecos Park Community Center, 17010 S. 48th St.

It is one of 15 Village Planning Committees in the city that review zoning and development plans and makes recommendations to the city’s Planning Commission. With construction at a standstill in Ahwatukee Foothills and city-wide, there has been little for the committee to do since it met last in February, so future committee meetings will focus almost exclusively on the general plan update and the visioning process.

For more information on the committee or the agenda, contact Dodds (602) 256-5618.
