Now that 2009 has drawn to a close the Kyrene School District has begun counting its tax credit donations for the year, including the last-minute donations that trickled in on New Year’s Eve last Thursday.

Tax credit donations are a sizable source of funding that KSD counts on each year for extracurricular activities. In 2008 tax credit donations for the entire district totaled just under $1.5 million. Like most districts, Kyrene is operating on a tight budget in 2010, and tax credit donations will be more important than ever.

“Money that comes to KSD from tax credit donations has to be used for extracurricular activities like athletics, art programs and field trips,” said Nancy Dudenhoefer, KSD community relations program manager. “The different schools will issue the tax credit receipts to donors within a few weeks.”

From 2007 to 2008, KSD tax credit donations increased by $214,656. A final tally for 2009 donations is expected to be released by the end of January.

On New Year’s Eve a steady stream of people from different areas of Phoenix and Tempe made their way to KSD headquarters to drop off their donations.

Raymond Stewart, an Ahwatukee Foothills resident, donated to the Mountain Pointe High School track team.

“My close friend was killed in an accident last year, and his daughter was on the track team,” Stewart said. “She has since gone to Brigham Young University and been very successful, and I want to make sure the team continues to prosper.”

Deepak Goyal, also an Ahwatukee Foothills resident, donated to his child’s choir at Kyrene Altadeña Middle School.

“We donate to the school every year, and this year the choir is going on a trip and they need help paying for it,” Goyal said.

Donations were collected by KSD employees, and Leila Dalton, who has been a secretary at Kyrene Akimel A-al Middle School for 20 years, noticed that there was a diverse group of donors this year.

“A lot of people are parents donating to their child’s school for specific programs, but we’ve also had grandparents and teachers donate,” Dalton said.

KSD is now accepting donations for next year. To make a tax credit donation, visit www.kyrene.org or drop off donations in person or by mail to KSD headquarters at 8700 S. Kyrene Road in Tempe.
