Mayor Phil Gordon said Tuesday that the senior center at Pecos Park in Ahwatukee Foothills will stay open in a newly revised draft budget that will be unveiled Tuesday.

"I'm guaranteeing the senior centers will now be able to be reinstated and not closed," Gordon said Tuesday during an interview.

The change, from a previous draft budget is because the Phoenix City Council approved last week extending the city's 2 percent sales tax on food.

"Five people made a hard decision and everybody will benefit from it," said Gordon, referring to the council vote where Ahwatukee Foothills Councilman Sal DiCiccio and two others voted against the tax.

Gordon also said that layoffs to fire and police will also be reduced thanks to the $50 million a year that is projected to come into city coffers with the tax, which takes effect April 1.
