Bank officials at Arizona Federal, 15625 S 48th St., speak with Sgt. Frank Matsco around noon on Friday after filing a report that the bank had been robbed.

Phoenix police are searching for a man who allegedly robbed the Arizona Federal Credit Union at 15625 S. 48th St., at the corner of Chandler Boulevard and 48th Street, around noon on Friday. Police said the suspect escaped by jumping over a fence into the nearby Andante Apartment complex at 15801 S. 48th St.

According to Lt. Mark Tallman, the man was described as a black male, 6 feet, 1 inch tall, 160 pounds, wearing a black baseball cap with a star emblem, beige pants and possibly a black, hooded sweater.

Police say the man presented a note and escaped with an unknown amount of money. No one was injured in the robbery. Officers, including at least one K-9 unit, were searching the area for the suspect.

Kyrene del Milenio Elementary School, Horizon Community Learning Center and St. John Bosco Interparish School all went into modified lockdown. All exterior doors to the schools were immediately locked, but the children continued to learn and go about their normal activities. A modified lockdown is a step down from a full lockdown, in which children actually take cover in their classrooms.

It was the first bank robbery in Ahwatukee Foothills of 2010, but the 11th in the past 12 months.
