While the economic recession plagued Ahwatukee Foothills families and businesses in 2009, area schools held H1N1 immunization clinics to keep their students healthy. Residents stayed mindful of their health with various exercise groups and kept themselves entertained with theater and comedy.

AF residents pinched pennies to get by

Ahwatukee Foothills residents felt the pinch of the bad economy this year, and in March Nina Brannock, also known as the “coupon lady,” shared her tricks for saving vast amounts of money on groceries. Using the Coupon Sense Web site, Brannock has saved over $40,000 on groceries in the past 10 years. To start saving money yourself, visit www.thecouponlady.info.

Teachers made learning fun in AF

This past May, seventh-grade science teacher Tara Dale used 4.6-billion-year-old moon rocks to engage the interest of her students at Akimel A-al Middle School. The moon rocks were on loan to Dale from NASA.

“While I have the moon rocks, I have to take them everywhere with me, even the restroom,” Dale said. “I also can’t take them home because they have to stay in a safe at the school that is approved by NASA. If we didn’t have a safe at the school we would have to keep them at the police station.”

Students from Kyrene de la Sierra Elementary School learned about the states of matter when they observed experiments with -320-degree liquid nitrogen, courtesy of the Arizona Science Center.

“One of the things we try to do as teachers is get the students excited about learning, and this breathes life into what I’m teaching them,” said teacher David Hoye, whose class attended the demonstration.

H1N1 threat kept schools in flu-preventative mode

This fall the threat of an H1N1 breakout kept children, parents and teachers vigilant with flu-preventative practices. H1N1 vaccination clinics came to schools in the Kyrene School District via the Mollen Immunization Clinics in mid-November.

AF residents stayed active

Ahwatukee Foothills residents did not let the economic recession hinder their fitness efforts. Groups like Team LUNA Chix and Foothills Running Group flourished in popularity. People of all ages joined the Galloway running group, which alternates walking and running.

Raising money for a cure

This October Ahwatukee Foothills residents banned together to hold numerous events to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Block parties, restaurant benefits and pink flamingo lawn decorations were just a few ways people raised money for the cause. Ahwatukee Foothills resident Greg Hoffman carried on the memory of his wife Jen when he walked in his fifth consecutive 3 Day Walk to benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure. His 3 Day team, Team Thrivr, raised more than $60,000 for Susan G. Komen For the Cure this year.

Entertaining Ahwatukee

The Ahwatukee Foothills Comedy Club kept residents laughing with good, clean fun at its monthly events at the Grace Inn. Honk!, a theatrical production put on by the Ahwatukee Children’s Theater, was nominated for five prestigious AriZoni Theater Awards. Also, Mountain Pointe High School graduate Stefanie Brown returned to Arizona State University’s Gammage Auditorium to perform in the Broadway Across America tour of Wicked
