A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crashed on Pecos Road between Interstate 10 and 40th Street around 2:50 p.m. Thursday, killing the driver and blocking traffic.

Sgt. Dave Reginato of the Phoenix police said that the vehicle had allegedly been driving at a high rate of speed on the Loop 202 in Chandler when it entered on to Pecos Road. For an unknown reason it swerved into the eastbound lane of traffic and collided with a heavy construction vehicle.

The force of the impact spun the Lincoln sedan, launching the engine block back into the westbound lanes of traffic. The driver, Brian P. Evans, 31, of Chandler died at the scene.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on Pecos Road was closed between 40th Street and I-10 for the investigation until 9:20 p.m. Thursday night.

The driver of the truck that Evans crashed into sustained minor injuries. There were no other injuries to drivers or passengers in the two other vehicles that sustained minor damage from flying debris.

Department of Public Safety detectives are still investigating the crash.
