Before the city can update the weighty General Plan, there is a question they want answered after Monday night’s Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning Committee meeting: “What do you value most in Phoenix, and why?”

The idea is to update the document by asking residents what they think is important and then incorporating the responses into the final document.

It’s a change of pace from 10 years when the General Plan, essentially a road map for the city’s future growth, was first prepared. Then people were encouraged to dive in and comment on the 14 elements contained in 500 pages.

Now city planners want to take it one step at a time, so that people can get more easily involved.

The plan is important because it lays out the direction for the city when it comes to neighborhoods, transportation, sustainability, open space, recreation and other issues that impact the quality of life in Phoenix.

And because some elements of the plan will impact areas including public transit and land preservation for the next 40 years, city staff hopes that young people will attend the meetings over the next few months and participate.

The General Plan meeting will be held at around 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Pecos Park Community Center, 17010 S. 48th St., directly after the conclusion of the Ahwatukee Foothills Village Planning Committee.

An explanation of the process will be followed by the question and then a discussion of what will follow.

Anyone with questions can contact planning manager Carol Johnson at (602) 262-6888.
