This summer, the Kyrene School District will offer summer programs that have a variety of classes that feature both academic enrichment and recreational activities.

Registration for Kyrene summer programs has already begun and the first classes start in June. Registration can be done online at www. and at the district office, 8700 S. Kyrene Road.

The After Hours Summer Camp for middle school students will be hosted by Akimel A-al and Aprende middle schools. The camp is open May 30 to July 27 from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and costs $145 for five days each week.

The Kids Club Summer Camps are for first- through fifth-graders and takes place over the same period of time as the After Hours camps. Locally, Kids Club will be hosted by Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary, 11820 S. Warner-Elliot Loop, and Kyrene de los Lagos Elementary, 17001 S. 34th Way.

There are other options that can be explored on the website.

Several new classes will be offered this year, including STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) University, Kyrene Extreme Adventure Club, and a Budding Entrepreneur class. The latter class teaches students how to set up their own online shop and business. They make a product, sell it online, and the proceeds benefit the Kyrene Foundation.

STEM University is a two-hour class taught to fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-graders, and takes place Monday through Thursday. It is taught by a teacher who helps develop the district’s science curriculum.

“There is a great focus on math and science in the class,” said Pete Flocken, Kids Club supervisor. “The Kyrene Extreme Adventure Club will show the kids how to set up tents and do things like outdoor cooking.”

The district will also offer a one-on-one tutoring session with Kyrene certified teachers in the afternoon during the summer for $35 an hour. Flocken said they match up the student with a teacher in the area they want help in.
