Cerritos garden vandalized

Cerritos Elementary Principal Darcy DiCosmo surveys what's left of her school's garden after vandals apparently jumped the fence over the weekend, ripped up plants, destroyed the watering system and smashed nearly every watermelon that students had been cultivating since the start of school. DiCosmo said not only were the students heartbroken at the senseless destruction, but they had eagerly anticipated harvesting the melons and taking them to the Kyrene Resource Center where they would have gone to needy families. The principal said while the destroyed plants cannot be restored, the incident could serve as a lesson to all students about how much vandalism hurts a community. Nov. 18, 2010
