Arizona State University freshman Brett Fabian, 18, demonstrates his mastery of the Wado-Ryu school of karate in an attempt to earn a second degree black belt Wednesday night during exams held once a year at the Mountainside Martial Arts Center, 3173 E. Chandler Blvd. It takes more than a decade of training to achieve that rank, said Rick Savagian, owner and chief instructor at the dojo. Fabian and Desert Vista High School junior Sam Petersen, 16, who tested for the same rank that night, will find out the results of their exam on Nov. 23.
