To all readers of the Ahwatukee Foothills News in my age range let me say, "Hi and let's get acquainted!" I do believe ours is a beautiful time of life. We have achieved so much. I also believe in and practice a very active lifestyle. I'm an early riser: 5 a.m. in the spring, summer and fall months and 6 a.m. through the winter. I'm in bed by 9 p.m. When I wake I eat a small breakfast of coffee, bran muffin and fruit. I take two soft gels of flax oil, one soft gel of 1,000 ml of vitamin E. Then I start walking at 9 or 10:30 a.m. in the winter. I walk three miles. I go to the Ahwatukee Rec Center every day except Wednesday and Sunday to work out and participate. By "working out" I mean doing my mile on the treadmill in the ARC's weight room. This takes approximately 17 minutes every day. Four afternoons a week are spent playing water volleyball on a co-ed team from 2 to 4 p.m. This is a huge commitment but it's the basis of my health. I've enjoyed it for 16 years. We have a wonderful group of 20 people. I have also practiced and taught yoga exercise learned from a book The Richard Hittleman Course. This started some 35 years ago and I still use the basic stretches and breathing exercises. I do believe in good diet rules. I try to stay away from bread and starches - especially white bread. I believe we each have a metabolism system that rules how we burn up the calories we take in. Part of this in inherited. We are a product of our genes. It's hard to break the pattern, but it is possible with discipline. There is great importance in our society today to look good and feel great. The ads make it look easy. It's not, but normalcy is possible with willpower and a few rules. After 55 women have to work twice as hard to burn up half as much as they ate 20 years ago. So what to do? Replacement: high protein, low carbohydrate, high fiber and low fat. There are lists to use to plan meals. Eliminate snacking in the evening while watching TV. Once you start eating three lean small meals a day you'll feel so much better and won't feel deprived. Fitness is a science. It requires daily dedication, determination, respiration and self discipline. Good luck and get moving. We've only just begun! Peggy Robles is a 71-year-old Ahwatukee Foothills resident. She recently published her poetry book Reflections in Rhyme and takes pride in staying healthy by walking and playing water volleyball.
