Why would someone ask for a facelift?

As people age, the skin on their cheeks tends to wrinkle and sag forward and they get jowls, (sagging skin on the jaw line). Another reason could be loose skin on the neck. Sometimes people who’ve lost a lot of weight request removal of sagging skin on face. A plastic surgeon can discuss the various options and tell you which one is right for you.

Do men or women usually get it?

Most often women, but men do also ask for it.

How should I prepare for the surgery?

It’s important not to take anything that increases the tendency to bleed such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Arrange your schedule so you can avoid physical activity for at least 14 days.

What’s the difference between a facelift, mini-facelift and Lifestyle Lift?

Lifestyle Lift is a technique marketed heavily by infomercials. It is essentially the same as a mini-facelift. A mini-facelift is like a facelift except that there is less extensive movement of the skin and shorter scars. In mild cases this works just fine. In cases with a lot of sagging skin, a full facelift is required for best results. A full facelift is a safe procedure, despite the claims of those who are marketing other techniques.

Is the surgery painful?

This surgery is less painful then many other cosmetic surgeries. Oral pain medication is prescribed.

Does insurance pay for the surgery?

It does not pay for it.

Will I look fake? What’s recovery like?

Bruising takes two to three weeks to go away. There is an immediate improvement. Loose skin is eliminated and scars are hidden behind the ear and in the hair. A facelift restores a natural appearance. Sometimes celebrities look unusual after their third facelift, as they don’t know when to quit. But there is no need for this appearance. A well-trained surgeon knows how to avoid creating a fake or a “pulled” look.
