Ahwatukee Foothills News

An overlooked Ahwatukee Foothills hotspot is the Safeway deli, where people congregate at lunchtime for unique sandwich options.

Located at 48th Street and Elliot Road, some of the favorite sandwiches include:

- Tuscan Chicken (hot), which is grilled chicken on pesto bread with artichoke hearts, red onions, marinated mozzarella, lettuce and tomato.

- The Big Easy, a cold sandwich featuring an olive mix, black forest ham, Genoa salami, provolone cheese and dressing.

-The California Dreamin', which is roasted turkey on rustic Italian bread, ranch dressing, avocado bacon and tomatoes.

- The Chicago South Sider, which is a cold roast beef sandwich on rustic Italian bread, with a horseradish cheddar, horseradish sauce, lettuce and tomato.

The deli also features the Arizona Fire, which was created right here in Phoenix. It comes on ciabatta bread with turkey, pepper jack cheese and jalapeños.

Most of the sandwiches are made from bread right from Safeway's bakeries. Meal deals include an option of potato chips or hot soup, such as Italian wedding soup or chili.

Safeway deli has introduced "Build your Own" sandwiches, all of which have six grams of fat or less. Customers have a choice of white or wheat baguette, several choices of meats, sauce and toppings.

There is also a large selection of specialty cheeses and olives to choose from.

The deli is also known for its "$5 Fridays," which feature a deli item ready to just pick up and take home. This week features the Roasted Chicken, and upcoming $5 Fridays include Primo Taglio meats, meatloaf and pizza.

Healthcare reform
In a final push for a sweeping healthcare overhaul, President Barack Obama urged a simple "up-or-down" vote on the legislation. What would your vote be?
Up! Let's get this thing passed already!
The proposals look good on paper, but I'm still hesitant about its execution.
Down. It's time to go back to the drawing board.
