Ahwatukee Foothills News

Last month, Chef Elliot Bernardo of Ahwatukee Foothills' own Nello's Pizza made it to the top 10 out of 60 entrants in the Shamrock Farms Fresh Chef Challenge at the Arizona Culinary Institute.

Bernardo's recipe was for yukon gold potato and wild mushroom au gratin with blue cheese and pancetta. During a cook-off last month, Bernardo and the other competitors prepared their dishes and judges sampled and scored them on taste and originality.

"His dish was great," said Molly Costa, spokesperson for the contest. "All of the dishes were great, but we could only have five advance as finalists."

Five Valley chefs remain in the running to win $2,500 and industry bragging rights to the Shamrock Farms Fresh Chef title. Consumers can help determine who Arizona's Fresh Chef is by voting for their favorite chef and recipe.

Finalists include Scott Tompkins of Skye, Jeff Storcz of Grayhawk Golf Club, Lenard Rubin of The Vig, Michael C. Brown of Italia and David Schmidt of L'Auberge Restaurant on Oak Creek/Hundred Rox.

Healthcare reform
In a final push for a sweeping healthcare overhaul, President Barack Obama urged a simple "up-or-down" vote on the legislation. What would your vote be?
Up! Let's get this thing passed already!
The proposals look good on paper, but I'm still hesitant about its execution.
Down. It's time to go back to the drawing board.
