Nearly two dozen children have traveled almost 10,000 miles to perform a concert this weekend at an Ahwatukee Foothills church.

The African Children’s Choir, made up of more than 20 Ugandan children in fourth through sixth grade, will perform this Sunday, March 14, at Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 S. 48th St.

A church committee and its Mission Africa group, which raises funds to send missionaries to Africa with medical and other supplies, bring four concerts to the church every year.

This weekend’s family-friendly event should start at 7 p.m., and hopes to provide variety, with a mix of well-known gospel tunes, traditional African music and dancing, committee member Mike Downey said.

“We hope to raise awareness for Mission Africa, and give a better understanding of some challenges they face, and at the same time, enjoying some fun music,” he said.

After the concert, the choir plans to stay with host families in Ahwatukee Foothills and attend the church school until Wednesday.

Free tickets will be available at the door. The church asks for a suggested donation of $5 per person, or $15 for a family of three or more, to help cover costs associated with bringing the group to the church.

A free-will offering will be taken during the concert, to provide education and aid for other African children.

For more information, visit the church Web site at www.mvlutheran.org.

Kathleen Gormley is interning this semester for the Ahwatukee Foothills News. She is a sophomore at Arizona State University.
