On Aug. 11 at 5 and 9 p.m., it’s all about supplies.

Customers bring in school supplies to donate to the Kyrene School District, and On the Border will supply the ingredients for kids to build their own ice cream sundaes.

“Basically what we’re trying to do is we’re trying to put more involvement in the community,” On the Border service and marketing manager Daryl Johnson said. “I think that’s a big problem with restaurants a lot is they’re not trying to use what people they have coming through their doors to give back.”

On the Border, located at 5005 E. Ray Road, is trying to collect as many school supplies as possible and evenly divide whatever supplies it gets among the schools in the Kyrene School District.

Just for showing up, each kid will receive a coupon for a free meal on their next visit and they get to have a place where they can build their own sundaes with all the toppings.

Johnson said the restaurant plans to hold another sundae event along the same guidelines before the spring semester as well, hopefully bigger than this one.

On the Border caters to a family atmosphere with events like petting zoos, face-painting and making papier mache pinatas for the kids.

“We’re more of a family restaurant than a bar-type atmosphere with live bands,” Johnson said.

In mid-April the restaurant completely revamped its menu to add a lot of healthier, grilled items and lower prices. The price of the two-item “create your own combo” option, for example, was dropped by a dollar to $6.99.

One of the newest menu items is the mango salsa mahi mahi, which is red chile-seasoned fillet of fish grilled and topped with a mango citrus jicama salsa and served with cilantro lime rice and grilled vegetables.

“We’re considered more ‘Tex Mex’ as opposed to Arizona Mexican food,” Johnson said. “We have enough items on our menu that other restaurants won’t offer, but we’ll have the enchiladas too. We have the same items as them but we have more than what they have.”
