Former Ahwatukee Foothills resident Jim Poulos’s golf tournament will take place for the sixth time April 24, but it will be the first time the founder won’t be there to play. Poulos died of esophageal cancer in September at the age of 49.

The golf tournament has been going on for six years, but for the first time will benefit the Jim and Tracy Poulos Charitable Foundation in honor of its founder. The foundation benefits Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the United Methodist Outreach Ministries homeless shelter and the Arizona Humane Society.

The owner of four Shih Tzus, Tracy Poulos said she decided to help the Arizona Humane Society because “we love animals. And it’s a no-kill shelter, which is important.” She also volunteers at the UMOM homeless shelter.

Jim Poulos started the tournament to raise money for his church. A member of the Parish council, Poulos participated in various church events like the annual Greek festival.

“Jim was really active in the church,” said Jack Sarsam, vice president of operations for Robson Communities Inc., the company Poulos worked at for 24 years. “We wanted to continue the golf tournament to benefit the church after he passed away.”

Born in Phoenix, Poulos graduated from Brophy College Prep in 1977. He moved to Ahwatukee Foothills  in 1988 and married Tracy Poulos in 1997.

Poulos’s passions included Arizona State University sports, exercise and running, Tracy Poulos said.

“People in Ahwatukee knew him because he ran 10 miles a day,” she said. “They may not know his name, but they would recognize (him).”

Poulos’s route went from Kachina Drive to Equestrian Trail to behind South Mountain Park.

Robson Communities donated the use of the course to the event. After beginning at Robson as an accountant, Poulos was eventually promoted to vice president of operations, overseeing various sections of the company, including land development and engineering.

“Everybody here remembered Jim and loved Jim because he worked his way up the ladder here,” Sarsam said. “There was never any air of superiority.”

Tracy Poulos said those wishing to help can donate items to either raffle off or sell at the tournament’s silent auction. Items that will be available at the event include a flat-screen television, sports tickets and autographed sports memorabilia.

Registration costs $125 for a single player, or $400 for a foursome. Lunch only options are available for $20.

For more information on this weekend’s tournament, contact Ronnie Cubbage at (520) 705-1772. The event will take place at the Robson Ranch Golf Club, 5750 N. Robson Blvd., in Eloy.

Christopher Ogino is interning this semester for the Ahwatukee Foothills News. He is a senior at Arizona State University.
