Dozens of local dancers are celebrating a successful competition and invitation to a national competition this summer.

Nearly 50 dancers from Dance Depot in Ahwatukee Foothills received invitations to the Spotlight National Dance Cup in Seaside, Ore. this June.

“It’s the elite of the elite,” said Georgia Foote, Dance Depot owner.

The girls, ages 8 to 17, qualified at a regional tournament in Phoenix in January.

At the national competition, they will perform more than 60 solo and group routines in styles “across the board,” such as tap, hip-hop, lyrical and modern, Foote said.

Ten to 15 studios from across the country will compete at the national contest.

The girls regularly practice between 15 and 20 hours every week.  For two weeks before the competition, the studio will hold an intensive workshop for fitness and to polish the routines, she said.

“Each competition is a little bit different,” Foote said. “Last year we did phenomenally. We brought home a slew of top awards.”

The studio has traveled to Las Vegas, Daytona Beach and Disney World in recent years for national competitions.

To offset the cost, they are hosting a series of fundraisers.

The studio raised $1,000 towards their goal of $5,000 at a recent car wash. This Saturday, they will hold another event, located at the studio at 3233 E. Chandler Blvd. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds from a barbeque and several promotional tables will help aid the Oregon trip.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my staff and the company for all the hard work they put in to making things work,” Foote said. “Anybody that would like to come out and have fun and help support these girls who’ve worked so hard, it would be greatly appreciated.”
