Dear Claudia:

I just moved into my house and need to buy window coverings. I want to protect my wood flooring and nice fabric on the furniture from fading in the sun's rays, yet still look attractive. What do you suggest?

Answer:

We like to enjoy our beautiful Arizona sun and take advantage of the natural light yet it can be very damaging to our interiors, so protecting the flooring and furniture from the sun's harmful rays is a key element to consider.

There are several types of window treatments that I recommend. It depends on how much you want to control the sunlight. Some of my favorite looks are shutters or drapes with a liner to help control the light. Hunter Douglas has Silhouette shades and a variety of products that will work nicely to control the amount of sunlight you want to allow in, yet still work with your home décor.

Keep in mind that it is important to choose a product that will allow the necessary light needed for each room. Take into consideration that window treatments help eliminate glare on the TV screen, but if you have plants in the room they will also need to receive appropriate lighting.

Dear Claudia:

I have very tall windows and it has been difficult to find ready-made window coverings in the fabric and design I want that are long enough to properly cover the windows. Is it possible to have them custom-made on a budget?

Answer:

It is a challenge to find ready-made window coverings in extra-long lengths. You will most likely need to have them custom-made. Yes, I believe that you can still have them made on a budget depending on the fabric you choose and the complexity of the design.

The advantage of having custom window coverings is that you get to choose the exact fabric and style that you like and that they will fit each window exactly. You may select the fabric at a local fabric store and have them made at a work room nearby. Consult a professional designer for recommendations.

Window coverings add an important touch to a room. They help to shield interiors from the sun's rays, provide privacy when chosen properly and after installation they are the finishing touch to the décor.
