Several Ahwatukee Foothills musical groups are set to perform at this weekend’s annual Arts Jam in Tempe.

Desert Vista High School’s Jazz Choir and Altadeña Jazz Band will perform at Saturday’s event.

This year’s Arts Jam will be at Corona del Sol High School in order to cut back on fees and increase community involvement, said Jennifer Doering, vice president of communications for Arts Council for Youth, a non-profit organization planning Arts Jam.

In addition to Ahwatukee performances, the event will also include booths featuring various arts and crafts, free chair massages, food vendors and free face painting and other activities for kids.

“Without the kids, the music, the creative energy bustling, it would be just another morning of busy chores,” Doering said.

A high level of student participation and involvement enriches the event, she said.

“When school performers share the results of their hard work with people in the greater community, I think they become encouraged to develop their talents,” Doering said. “When community members who may otherwise be doubtful of the values of the Arizona public education, when they get to share in the performances, it’s easier for them to support our schools and arts programs.”

Admission is free. Proceeds from silent auction items will benefit the groups, Doering said.

Money raised at Arts Jam benefits performance groups as grants and other forms of financial assistance and publicity.

This year’s Arts Jam features the largest silent auction to date at the festival.

“For me, it’s about catching these kids and showing them that the community really does care if they’ve worked all year to ... hit those notes,” Doering said.

The festival will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Corona del Sol High School, 1001 E. Knox Road.
