Dear Claudia:

All the walls in my home are white. Finally; I realized that we need some color in my house on the walls, however, I am not sure what colors to choose. Please help.

Answer:

Adding color to your walls, or even just some of them, can transform the space. It can be an easy way of making a change to your décor and get it ready for the holidays. In some cases it’s just about accenting one or more walls to make a huge impact to your décor.

Color it is very different to everyone: how we see color and how it makes us feel. When choosing a color select a few that you might think could work and then consider what you are working with; the floor, furniture, lighting and accessories to determine a color. There are some colors that are trendy, in style and chic, but it all depends how we see them. We all seem to want to simplify our environments and make the spaces feel comfortable.

Whatever the situation, do not be afraid of color. Know that if you have a piece of color that you like the paint companies can produce it for you with their new technology. Color will add dimension, contrast and uniqueness to the space and I am certain you will enjoy the change.

Dear Claudia:

I would like to add some texture or dimension to my walls, but I am not sure what I can do.

Answer:

To accent some walls, or a space in your home, it is very trendy to use faux paint, venetian plaster, tiles or to use rocks that one can find in different styles, colors and shapes. Furthermore, wallpaper is making a huge comeback but with a new look not at all as we know it.

Faux paint and Venetian plaster are painting techniques that require hiring a professional with experience. I will not recommend for a first-time do-it-yourself unless you can practice enough. Make sure the person you hire has a portfolio and, even better, already has work with your colors before and that the work is consistent. Most times they can provide you an actual sample on a board.

When it comes to tile and rocks there is such a big selection that you can most likely find what you are looking for to compliment your space. I recommend using it only in a few areas as an accent to your décor. Wallpaper has a different look in recent years, take a look at the selection before making a choice. It’s easy to find one that will work with your style.
