Dear Claudia:

I would like to change the look of my living and dining rooms. They are very outdated and I would like a brand new style. Can you give me some general suggestions where to begin a project like this?

Answer:

This is the perfect time to start redecorating your home. Take advantage of the mild weather and refresh the décor now so you can simply relax during the summer months.

There are several suggestions I would like to make. First, set a budget. Second, find a style you like and see what pieces of the design you already have. Third, make a list of the new products and see if they are within your budget. Note that sometimes it is not necessary to buy new pieces of furniture when you can accomplish another look just by making a few subtle changes, such as a new area rug, new lighting, accessories, fresh paint or even reupholstering, refinishing a piece you already have.

If you do not feel confident about putting it all together yourself, retain the services of an interior designer. Working with a professional can save you money and the whole process will be much easier. Enjoy your new living and dining rooms.

Dear Claudia:

My bathroom needs a total remodel. I have been getting quotes from contractors but I am not sure if I am making the right decisions, as I’ve never done this before.

Answer:

It can be overwhelming to take on such a task of renovation, especially if it is all new to you. It takes all the fear away if you just do some research beforehand.

First, it is important to identify the task that needs to be accomplished, the look/style, the products to be used, the design and the budget. It might be necessary to consult with a professional that will help you with their expertise. Once you identify exactly what needs to be done I suggest getting quotes from some contractors. During this phase you can compare their pricing and determine which one you would like to work with. Make sure they are registered contractors with experience and, if possible, check their references to see if others were satisfied with their work.

Keep in mind that putting together a bathroom usually takes several trades: electrician, plumber, tile setter, etc. I suggest hiring a contractor that can do it all.

Good luck and enjoy your new bathroom.
