Peter Moosbrugger has been involved in running several types of businesses, including land investment deals and floor manufacturing.

For his new venture, he wanted to do something more fun.

That something is Zoyo, a new frozen yogurt and cupcake shop that was scheduled to open in the Ahwatukee Plaza early this week.

Workers were still putting together the store Friday, which architecturally features colorful striped walls and windowed garage doors that can be rolled open to invite customers in.

“The goal is to make it hip and contemporary, but still family-friendly,” Moosburger said. “We wanted to have a business that was fun and trendy, and we saw this yogurt thing as a thing of the future.”

Moosbrugger remembers past yogurt fads – first in the 1970s, then in the 1990s, both of which eventually faded away. But he thinks this time, the yogurt trend will stick.

“I think the difference is it’s self-serve,” Moosbrugger said. “It’s empowering, and it’s kind of fun.”

Plus, between its active cultures and lower calorie-count compared to ice cream, frozen yogurt is a perfect fit for health-conscious Arizonans, he said.

That’s not to say everything at the store will fit that mold. Moosbrugger is also proud that the shop will sell Tammie Coe cupcakes, gourmet Phoenix-based baked goods that are currently available at places like La Grande Orange in Phoenix and AJ’s Fine Foods.

“Just a ‘something for everyone’ kind of concept,” Moosbrugger said. “Really, the goal is to have something for every kind of dessert experience.”

Moosbrugger’s background may not be in food, but his fellow investors are involved in several Dunkin’ Donuts franchises. And his manager, Sheena Tracy, has most recently worked as a catering manager for the donut store.

Tracy said she’s looking forward to getting involved in the community. She’s already talked to one religious group about holding fundraisers, and hopes to reach out to schools and little leagues as well.

“We’re open to anything,” Tracy said. “Anything that will help the community.”

Moosbrugger has a customer service-oriented approach to business. Once things get up and running, he’d like to add things like curbside service for moms who need to stay in the car with their young children.

And he’s also focused on aggressive expansion plans. Even though the Ahwatukee Foothills store is Zoyo’s first location, he’d like to have at least five open Valleywide by the end of the year.

Zoyo is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays; and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays at 4923 E. Chandler Blvd., Suite 301.
