Back by popular demand, Carri Blake-Brekke, more commonly known as "Mrs. B," entertained Kyrene Monte Vista Elementary School students and families Jan. 25 with her wacky songs and stories for the second year in a row. Blake-Brekke's "Mrs. B's Storytime...with a twist!" is a worldwide hit, and Monte Vista students filled the multi-purpose room at 6 p.m. dressed in pajamas, toting teddy bears and dolls, eager to see what the storyteller brought to entertain them this year. Blake-Brekke, a Chandler resident, tours book stores, schools, shopping malls, zoos and even conferences and corporate events across the country and abroad, but says Kyrene is her favorite district to visit. She has performed at six Kyrene schools, including Lomas, Monte Vista and Sierra in Ahwatukee Foothills. "Kyrene is an extraordinary district across the board," Blake-Brekke said. "I don't know what it is about the district, but it's amazing. It's a consistent district and it's been stellar at every school." Blake-Brekke is a former medical transcriber, but in 2002 she decided she wanted to spend the second half of her life doing something she loves. Since first taking up the guitar at age 11 she has written and performed silly songs for her family and friends, and when the business world lost its flare, the mother of six took a step in a different direction. Blake-Brekke took advice from her husband and trademarked the name "Mrs. B's Storytime ... with a twist!" Today she performs her own satirical spins on classic tales, unique stories about nature and even tales adults can relate to. "A lot of the stuff I wrote for my kids," Blake Brekke said. "One day my husband said I should turn my songs into books. Now we are in our sixth year." Monte Vista PTO vice president Libby Peterson said not just her performances, but Mrs. B's books have been a tremendous hit for Monte Vista kids. "Last year parents were saying the books they bought are the kids' favorite books," Peterson said. "Mrs. B's Storytime...with a twist!" was funded by the Monte Vista PTO and free for students and families to attend.
